Traveling for work or pleasure this year? Worried about getting sick while you are on the go? Then you need to read these helpful reminders to keep you healthy on-the-go.
It is never a good time to get sick, but it is especially difficult when you are travelling. Whether you are heading out for a weekend getaway or heading to Family Reunion soon, these six healthy practices can help keep you feeling your best.
1. Get your Zzz’s
Sleep is your most important priority. Lack of sleep deprives your immune system, resulting in a multitude of health consequences. Even though the excitement is high during Family Reunion, be sure to get plenty of rest. Need a little help? Melatonin is a great supplement to help you sleep.
2. Hydrate
Be sure to drink plenty of water. Coffee, tea or soda may be your morning drink of choice, but don’t forget to have water with lunch and throughout the day. Staying hydrated is essential. Bring a portable water bottle with you so you always have fresh water.
3. Wash Your Hands
Washing your hands has been said to be the single easiest way to avoid getting sick. When you attend large events, you touch many surfaces and shake many hands.
Many travelers carry small bottles of hand gel. These are great as a backup, but they aren’t a replacement for soap and water. A best practice is to wash your hands under hot water for at least 30 seconds before and after every meal and each time you visit the restroom.
4. Eat for Your Mind as well as Your Body
When traveling, it’s OK to treat yourself to a little more than you normally would. It is also OK to try new foods. If you are going to indulge, instead of stressing about it, make a plan about it. You don’t have to avoid all temptations. However, the key is to splurge in moderation and eat well the rest of the time. Pack healthy snack foods to carry with you during the day. Locate the nearest healthy grocery store to your hotel and get your fruits and vegetables when you arrive. Not only will your waistline thank you, your mind will be more alert.
5. Get By With a Little Help
If you regularly take vitamin supplements, don’t forget to bring them with you. It’s also a good idea to bring an extra supplement, such as Emergen-C, to help keep your immunity strong. Immune-boosting supplements will give you that extra oomph you will need since you are in new surroundings and exposed to different germs and bacteria.
6. Keep Movin'
Take the stairs, go for a walk around the hotel or conference center where you are at, and make use of the gym if there is one. It’s a good habit to always pack your workout clothes and swimsuit.
